One question that always pops up during my talks and forums is if people should buy their own domains in lieu of using free blogging/website platforms. I’ve answered it in probably a dozen ways already but it was only when I was giving a Blogging 101 Seminar at Victory Greenhills when I think I hit home with the most logical answer. If you think about it, it’s really simple.
How many people do you think have the same name as you in this world? Probably hundreds, thousands, or even millions right?
How many of them do you think are planning on buying the domain name of their (your) name?
When someone searches your name on Google, do you want someone else to dictate what’s written there?
Buying a domain is relatively cheap. It’s a good investment and will go a long way in building your personal brand.

If you are into Internet Marketing, buying your own domain is no longer an option. It’s a must. The free platforms could only get you so far, or at least they are useful in helping you drive traffic.
Anyway, having your own domain is like having your own real estate in the Internet. You cultivate it, earn from it, if not sell it.
agree. My own blog flew when I transferred it to my own domain.
Nice read.
@Elevic: I have a friend who treats domains like real estate. He buys premium domains, builds traffic, and then sells it later on.
@Mon: Thanks for the comment!
I think they are called the cyber squatters
This year I wanted to buy a domain name that is very important to me. Guess what?! It was being sold to me for USD7,000.
Major rip off!
I agree. Though I didn’t buy a domain name with my name, it works for me. ..
