Two Kinds of Bosses

(Editor’s Note: This is a fictional story which basically shows two common types of bosses/managers)

Dean and Raymond are two managers supervising teams of call center agents somewhere in Makati. They both climbed up the corporate ladder by starting as support agents for a tech account. However they have very different styles of resolving conflict and managing their teams.

Dean is candid, upfront, blunt, and pretty much a bit tactless when it comes to correcting his agents. He has a reputation of having a bad temper and short patience. In fact there were several instances when he got mad at an agent in the presence of other people. He doesn’t really do this with any malice it’s just that he gets easily frustrated and doesn’t have the patience to guide and mentor his people.

Raymond, on the other hand, is more sociable and friendly. He’s the type of boss that many would consider as “Kabarkada”. However you never want to be on his bad side. Raymond is the type that talks behind the back of others. He rarely properly corrects his agents when something goes wrong. Instead he would slightly “scold” them (not really reinforcing the error) but when the guy isn’t around he would talk about how bad the agent was with others.

These two kinds of bosses are actually common in the workplace. A lot of managers become promoted without the necessary training in people and relationship management. When you start leading a team it’s really less about what you can do on your own but how you can get your team to do excellent work.

Employees who get promoted to managers should undergo training on how to properly inspire, motivate, and correct their subordinates or it will be hit and miss.

The next time you’re about to scold a subordinate pause and ask yourself if you’re going to be a Dean, Raymond, or will you be better than both? There’s no need to embarrass or degrade someone (regardless if it’s directly or behind their back). You’ll just end up hurting not just the person but the company as a whole because you’ll just pull productivity down the drain.

  2. There’s another kind of boss…one that doesn’t know what he’s doing and makes decisions on a whim. This kind of boss cannot mentor anyone, even if he is feeling barkada with everyone. I had the best boss when I was working for Level Up. After working under her, everyone else that followed (and the ones before her) paled in comparison. That’s why I chose not to have a boss anymore.

It is a case of promoting someone without proper training or initiation on becoming a boss. They are not trained to coach, mentor and disciple their subordinates.
