Filipino online communities, especially bloggers and Multiply users, are enraged over an alleged “Serial UP Cat Killer“. A 18 year-old UP student named JC Candare blogged on his Multiply how me brutally kills cats around the University of the Philippines. This turned out to be the biggest mistake of his life. In a matter of minutes, his Multiply account was already flooded with comments. JC was forced to set his account into private, and some people have claimed that he has already deleted his entry. However, some people were able to get screenshots and began quoting them in their own Multiply accounts. Then it spread to the popular Micro-blogging tool, Plurk. After Plurk, it spread to various local and international forums. At the same time, bloggers started to pick up the content and began talking about it on their blogs.
JC’s blog post fired a chain of events that every Marketer dreams of for his product or brand. This is Viral Marketing at it’s purest form – without any corporate influencer driving the growth. In this case, we see the interplay between various platforms of social media. With each jump, the topic gains supporters and it eventually snowballs into a massive movement against the “Serial UP Cat Killer”.
In the words of Seth Godin, JC’s blog post has produced a Tribe. A group of people united with one vision – justice for cats and retribution against the “Serial UP Cat Killer”.
I really wouldn’t be surprised if this eventually gets blown out of proportion and lands a spot on the broadsheets and maybe on Television. Here’s a quote of his blog post:
4th Epic Fail: An Accidental Crime. First day sa supercon. Lunch time came. On our way out of old NIP I saw the cat I almost killed last Tuesday. Now everyone knows I hate cats. It’s an unexplainable feeling towards them. Like some internal hatred. Hours later, habang abala sa XRD, a guy came in. Tanong niya: “Sinong pumatay dun sa pusa?” Bang! Dat was me boi. Guilty as charged. I didn’t see it die pero sabi ni Myles it coughed up blood or at least something like that daw. Didn’t realize I gave it a fatal hit. This isn’t the first time I’ve killed a cat but this time it’s different. It didn’t occur to me back then that the cat had a leash. So I think somebody owns it. Well it’s very well loved in NIP from what I heard and I just ended it’s life.
So there you go I’m sorry. And I wont be striking another one for maybe about a month. It feels good when your beating it(a cat) up but you suddenly feel something strange when it turns off permanently. That’s how I feel right now. And maybe for the next days. Dang, am I a cat serial killer?
To his credit, JC is one hell of a writer. So good in fact that he gave birth to a movement that wants his head.

I love cats, it’s been my goodluck charm for the past 11 years. From what I read, maybe he needs some medication (probably bi-polar disease something) and the good news is it can be treated. Maybe his parents lack guidance during his young days and that left him doing things he thought is fun or just curious about the story that cats have 9 lives so it’s okay to beat them up but it isn’t.
Maybe next time he would enjoy killing dogs, then in the later future humans.
And just imagine how this will affect his chances of landing a job after college. A lot of companies now are “googling” applicants even here in the PH.

Neither then should marketers ever dream of reliving some horrid fiasco just to create noise. In anything tragic, Filipinos naturally unearth the courage to speak their mind, thus your so-called tribe. Incidents like this though, should never be used to stir any “market”.

@Nicole: I’m not telling Marketers or companies to come up with a negative story arc that will become viral and help them later on. The purpose of the post is to just illustrate how powerful viral marketing is and how easy it is for tribes to form once given a vision and channels of communication.
As for the writer comment, agree that he’s not a good writer “technically”. I said that he was a good one on the basis that what he wrote had traction and pulled a lot of emotional strings which eventually snowballed into a movement that would come back to haunt him.

You said JC is one hell of a writer. What do you mean by this? For one, I don’t think code switching (between Filipino and English) is “good” writing. It does not even come close to being artistic. As a narrative though, it certainly can make one’s blood boil–not because of how it was composed but because of the message it conveys.

I agree with “JC is one hell of a writer…”. He writes so good that everyone could clearly imagine what he did to the cat. He can even pour his emotions very well in writing, that everyone actually calls him a psycho. With all due respect, I do not think that kid qualifies as “poor.” He is a college student–of UP at that.
Right now, he is pitiful at best. I do not think he was incapable of discernment when he made a trampoline out of the feline. In fact, based on what he wrote, he was enjoying it.
Will he be traumatized? I am not a psychology expert so I would not hazard a guess. Will people go on a witch hunt and run after him? Honestly, I don’t think so. I will not, no matter how much I wanted to return the favor (in behalf of the cat). That would be a waste of energy. I doubt if he has learned his lesson. But one thing is certain–he has felt the power of public opinion.

His action is disturbing, ab initio. However, what disturbs me more is how people reacted to his action, going as far as wanting him expelled from the university or even dead. Is this another an-eye-for-an-eye-and-a-tooth-for-a-tooth kind of thing? I think this is an alarming example on how rational people become barbaric once they act out of pure rage. I hope that we can see things beyond the act of killing the cat. I will bet everything I have that JC is in an excruciatingly difficult and painful situation right now. And please dont say that he deserves it. People do commit mistakes, unfortunately his was so sensationalized and blown out of proportion. Wanting him expelled from the university is way too much. It may be just one kitten. And it may be just one person. But it’s supposedly a premier institution we’re talking about — an institution that imparts knowledge, skills and values, and is a training ground for how future leaders and movers of society are supposed to act when unleashed on the world.
One act of violence against one small kitten by one youth from UP is like saying a site like Cherry Hill doesn’t have to worry about one additional tree being felled to accomodate just one more house. Do we wait for the proverbial straw to break the camel’s back?
Mr. Candare obviously needs professional help. And we should send a message to those with similar violent tendencies that such impulses are unnatural and cannot go unchecked in our society. He is not a manly hunter out to provide for his family. It is simply a sadistic act! And he even had the gall to brag about it! Who knows where such behaviour will lead to? We cannot do anything about the kitten anymore. But we can do a lot for Mr. Candare, for others like him, and for their potential victims.
Intervention is needed at this point…on many levels! The UP of yore didn’t need such petitions to act on supposedly “small” events such as this one, its leaders knew enough to act straightaway on events of value.
I don’t think asking for disciplinary action from UP, and for laws provided in the animal welfare act to be enacted, would be blowing anything out of proportion. That’s the best way JC Candare can be helped. If he wants to move on from this tragic state of affairs, he should be the one asking for all these.

you can say that because you have a bias on cat’s if you look at it in a rational view. that guy needs to be helped. guess what UP student man sya o hindi nangyayari na yun. kahit nga ibang universities may makikita kang nagmamalupit sa mga hayop… he’s just a student and what do students need.. that is education. to be educated on what is right and wrong which are very subjective. I am a cat lover and in fact own a really fat cat but as an ecologist i am aware of the predation impact of stray cats to local wildlife especially to birds. In australia feral cats and dogs have caused the near-extinction of many wildlife species that their government has sanctioned the humane killing of these strays by way of gunshot to the head. I know of many beautiful ground-dwelling birds in UP (Ashy Ground Thrush, Red-bellied Pitta, Philippine Nightjar, etc) that have been decimated because of stray cats. Some of these wild birds are endemic and near-threatened. Should the UP Administration sanction the humane killing of these strays in the campus, how do you think will the constituents react? What do people in this forum think?
