I had the chance to visit Senator Antonio Trillanes in Camp Crame a few days ago. We talked a lot about different topics but mostly on the current political landscape. I know a lot of people have branded Senator Trillanes negatively due to his stint at the Manila Peninsula, but after meeting him face-to-face and hearing him speak, you will know that this guy really loves his country and that he puts it above everything else. Anyway, we also talked about the role of the internet in the 2007 elections, and how big it’s impact will be in 2010. I sent him follow-up questions after I left and he was kind enough to answer them. Check it out after the break.
Author’s Note: Since his holding area is in a maximum security area, I couldn’t take pictures or videos. In fact, the guards took all of my gadgets at the gate.
New Media Philippines (NMP): How did you use the internet in your campaign for the 2007 senatorial elections? Was it effective?
Senator Trillanes (ST): During my campaign in ‘07, I used the internet, primarily, in three ways. First, as a source of information for myself when I was preparing my legislative agenda and, through my website, as a source of information about my candidacy/person that can be accessed by the internet-using electorate and, of course, the media.
Second, internet was used in my campaign to actively disseminate information about my candidacy. We did this through email blasts and the social networking sites.
Third, we used it as a means to communicate and coordinate with our network of campaign operators nationwide.
NMP: How big a role do you think the internet will play in the upcoming 2010 elections?
ST: Since the ‘07 elections, the internet has become the fastest growing medium of communications and, hence, will play a significant role in the coming elections. Still, it is expected to remain a distant second to TV as a primary source of information as far as the electorate is concerned.
NMP: Any message for the readers of New Media Philippines?
ST: The coming elections in 2010 will be a turning point in our nation’s history. Our country’s future is at stake. We must participate. We must choose responsibly our country’s next leader.
Thanks to Senator Trillanes and his staff.

A big round of applaused to Senator Trillanes….This country needs more Antonio Trillanes to kick all the bad elements including GMA and his devil husband. Whenever i hear the name of the Arroyo family, my blood pressure goes up, their family is getting on my nerves. I care so much for this country and I am very dissapointed for what the Arroyo family doing. I am wishing ST to have more strenght so he can come back and fight for the DEVIL FAMILY (ARROYO FAMILY).
