Pope is on Facebook & Youtube!

The Vatican is taking evangelism online. Just recently the Pope launched a new website which outlines his social media channels. He’s officially now on Facebook, Youtube, and he even has an iPhone application, haha! Pretty cool, eh? Other than the launching of this new site, the Pope also gave a message in theme with World Communications Day calling all priests and pastors to use new media to spread the Word of God. Here’s the summary of the message as posted on the site:

Presentation of Message

The theme of this year’s World Communications Day – The Priest and Pastoral Ministry in a Digital World: New Media at the Service of the Word – is meant to coincide with the Church’s celebration of the Year for Priests. It focuses attention on the important and sensitive pastoral area of digital communications, in which priests can discover new possibilities for carrying out their ministry to and for the Word of God. Church communities have always used the modern media for fostering communication, engagement with society, and, increasingly, for encouraging dialogue at a wider level. Yet the recent, explosive growth and greater social impact of these media make them all the more important for a fruitful priestly ministry.

While reading this article, Father Robert Reyes came to mind. He’s very involved in the local scene and he even has a blog and site sponsored by the Philippine Online Chronicles. Another person who I thought of is our pastor for Victory Greenhills, Pastor Dennis Sy. He’s a very active blogger and he has a talent for seamlessly merging the word in the context of current events.

Like what I always say, no where to go but up for social media and the internet. :)
