PLDT to buy 51.55% of Digitel (Sun Cellular)

Digitel’s parent company, JG Summit Holdings, disclosed yesterday to the PSE that they’re going to give up 51.55% in Digitel to PLDT. The deal will be share-swap and JG Summit Holdings will acquire 12.8% in PLDT shares. Total equity value of the entire transaction a whopping P74.1 Billion. This is definitely one of the most interesting things to happen in the teclo industry. This means that Sun Cellular and PLDT/Smart will be working together since they both have interests with one another and the only one in the opposite corner will be Globe.

  3. When I read about this article this morning, I was wondering if Digitel was Sun or something…(because I only vaguely remember what’s on my dongle’s billing statements). Now it’s been confirmed. I wonder what’ll happen next…

  4. I don’t think they will be combined. They will operate as different brands with different marketing strategies.

  5. IMO, monopoly (or in this case, an “almost” monopoly) is always not good for the consumers. Talo palagi ang consumers sa cases na ganito.

Dont we have anti-trust laws that prevents cartels, oligololies and monopolies?

    • It’s not a monopoly yet with Globe. Also I have a strong feeling that Google and Facebook will be Telco competitors globally soon.

Mr. Carlo Ople, I would just like to inquire: With the buying of PLDT on Sun’s share, would this affect the free calls and texts of Sun-to-Sun? I think this is the only reason why Sun is the best on this category (unlike Globe and Smart).
