Philippines Internet Users
Apr 13
The question a lot of Marketing Managers in the Philippines are asking themselves these days is “why go digital?” You can’t really blame these guys for asking about hard numbers and facts because that’s what they’re used to seeing. However, as Marketers, it’s our responsibility to see trends and capitalize so we can reach our consumers better. Marketers, especially Product Managers, should know how many internet users there are in the Philippines because that’s a potential addressable market for their brand. So how many Filipino internet users are there? There are various studies done by various agencies posted online. Most of them have pegged the internet user base in the Philippines to be at 14M – 20M for 2008, with a potential of reaching 24M in 2009.(source)
Here’s another study, this time according to Internet World Stats:

In terms of user habits based on a sampling size of around 1200 people, the Yahoo Nielsen Study goes on to say the following:
-71% of users access internet from internet cafes
- 51% of users claimed to Social Networking (Friendster, Facebook) sites on several occassions
- 33% of Filipino Internet users have blogs
- 53% of Filipino Internet users play online games (most probably below 20 y/o)
There are a lot of reasons why Marketers should go digital. Other than it being cost effective and very measurable, online marketing also paves the way for companies to get their message across in a more interactive and deep way compared to traditional advertising. That’s a topic for a different post though.
So there you go. The tale of the tape is pretty straightforward. There are roughly 16M-20M Philippine internet users already by 2009. Question now is what have you done to reach them?

What an amazing statistic. 30% of population have a blog? Between writing about themselves and reading about their mates, when does anyone have time to do stuff that would be worth blogging about?
