Perils of Mob Tweeting

The use of Twitter is snowballing in the Philippines. More and more Filipinos are getting hooked on the 144-word micro-blogging platform. For marketers, Twitter can be a double edged sword. It’s so easy to spread content, especially if the content is interesting and compelling because all it takes is one click to “retweet” something. We truly do live in a “share generation”.

The problem with Twitter is that people tend to not double check or even click the link of the content that they’re about to retweet. For example, there was a nasty rumor going around a few days ago about how Judy Ann Santos had a miscarriage. Julius Babao found the discussions on Twitter and he gave the couple a call and found out it wasn’t true.

Another interesting development was just this morning when the staff of Senator Noynoy Aquino made a mistake by tweeting something personal on the official Twitter account of Noynoy. His tweet said:

“Won’t be bringing a car to work na everyday! Stupid taxi who bumped my car! 5k down the drain!”

In a matter of minutes people were retweeting and posting this on other social media platforms like Facebook and Friendster. Later on Yahoo! Philippines even broke the story on their website. This forced the team of Noynoy to come out with an official statement.

We all have to be very careful with what we Tweet. If you’re in charge of a company make sure that you put policies in place that will safeguard your brand’s reputation. Spare yourselves the hassle of explaining yourselves like what happened with Noynoy Aquino. A very simple and effective policy would be to bar your company/ghost twitterers from doing multiple tweeting in one Tweet Deck client.

A corporate social media policy is definitely a must in these times.
