New Facebook Profile Page Guide

As we reported earlier, you can now activate the new Facebook profile page for your account. The new page has a different lay-out and it also offers several new features. It can be confusing at first so we decided to come up with a short and concise guide on what you should do once you activate your new Facebook profile page.

Facebook (1) | Facebook Profile

1. Activate Your New Profile Page

Unlike previous roll-outs, Facebook is letting users voluntarily opt-in to the new profile page lay-out. There’s no announcement yet on when all the pages will be migrated to the new version. To activate, just go to this page. There’s also some helpful information on that page with regards to the features that they implemented.

2. Update Your Profile Picture

Chances are you’re still sporting the cartoon character profile picture. It’s already a bit passe and in all honesty changing your picture to a cartoon character doesn’t really mean you’re helping against violence against children. There are foundations that you can go to for that.

3. Clean the Featured Photos

One of the new features of your profile is that it displays the recent 5 tagged photos of you. Given all the spam going on in Facebook those photos will probably be pictures of shoes, bags, networking marketing e-posters, event e-posters, or other useless and irrelevant stuff. Un-tag yourselves and show 5 decent pictures. If you’re into personal branding you might want to show pictures of you going about work (cooking, giving talks, or whatever your talent is).

4. Edit Your Information Tab

Now this will probably take the most time and effort. I think only a few people actually input the correct information in their Info page on Facebook and that’s okay since it was never highlighted in previous versions. However in the new profile page a summary of your information is posted on the header of your profile. Also Facebook added new fields and to make it more fun they include the photos of your answers in the info page. Facebook will also probably launch a marketing campaign letting people know about the beefed up info tab so your friends will most likely visit that page. To edit just click the EDIT PROFILE link on your header. There are several sections you can update which you can find on the left hand corner (they’re listed). Let me go through some of them.

Work & Employment

Facebook | Edit Profile

This is probably one of the more important things you should update because it’s shown right under your name in your Profile Page. Put in all of the work experience that you’ve done and you might want to include significant projects that you’ve accomplished to highlight your skills as a professional. Don’t forget to also check if your company has a thumbnail picture by typing in the name at the “Where do you work” field. If there is then you can delete the previous entries and replace them with the new ones with the correct thumbnail photo.

Relationships

Facebook | Edit Profile-4

You can now display different groups of friends and family at the lower left side of your Profile Page. To edit this go to the Relationships section and just add in members of your family. You can also create custom groups or lists and fill that up with members of your network and have them displayed as well.

Philosophy

Facebook | Edit Profile-2

In this section Facebook added a new field: People who inspire you. I tried this out by putting in the names of several book authors that I follow and I was happy to see that they were in Facebook’s database. To round things up put your favorite bible verse or quote.

Everything Else

Facebook (2) | Edit Profile

There are several more sections but I won’t bother going through them since they’re pretty much self-explanatory. Personally I liked this update of Facebook because it gave me a reason to fix the Info tab. The last time I updated that section was almost a year ago!

Anyway, looking forward to more updates from Facebook. It looks like this website will continue to evolve and change in the next few years. :)

  4. Ah, thank goodness they planned this. You’re right about the tags leading to bags, shoes and whatnot. It’s really annoying getting tagged for something that isn’t even relevant to me.
