My problem with Nokia phones

I recently got a Nokia E5 phone and I’m honestly disappointed with the over-all user experience. I’ve owned, tried, and reviewed a lot of phones already from different brands like Sony Ericsson, Samsung, Apple, and BlackBerry. While using the E5 I felt that I was taking a huge leap backwards in terms of the technology I was using. The main reason is the operating system. The Symbian OS being used by Nokia feels so ancient and 1990′s compared to what you get with iOS, Android, and the BlackBerry OS.

In terms of hardware the Nokia E5 is a fantastic phone. The QWERTY keypad is phenomenal to type on and the 5MP camera takes “decent” photos. The battery life is also exceptional. The over-all design of the phone is also nice. The steel-like back mixed with the black gives the handset a very classy and elegant feel.

Like what I said above the problems start showing when you open the phone and use it. The OS is sloppy and slow. It’s also a hassle trying to get apps in it. I also found out that there are no native apps yet for Twitter so that was a huge bummer.

If Nokia wants to get back the market share they’re losing to Apple, Android, and RIM then they should really dump Symbian. I heard that this phone sells for almost the same price as a BlackBerry Curve 9300. Getting the Curve makes more sense because of the BlackBerry OS 6 features including BlackBerry Messenger. Even the apps on BlackBerry are far superior compared to what’s being offered by Nokia’s app store, Ovi.

I read somewhere that Nokia is switching OS to MeeGo. Tech pundits and bloggers aren’t too happy with their decision and they’re hoping that Nokia will just put in Android OS into their phones. I’m impressed by Nokia’s desire to innovate but they really have to put out all the stops with Meego or else their market share in the smartphone category will keep on shrinking.

The Nokia E5 is a great phone for making calls and texts (nice keyboard, battery life, etc.) but in all other aspects it just pales in comparison to other smartphones.
