Multi-Platform Content

With the rapid advancement of technology, content publishers can’t limit themselves anymore to traditional channels like TV, radio, and print. There are so many platforms available these days to reach out to your target market which you can use to build long lasting relationships with them which can result to positive word of mouth and new revenue streams. Brands are already starting to realize the power of social networking and the internet but the next frontier is definitely mobile, especially here in the Philippines.

Do you have an App?
I was really surprised when I saw that Manila Bulletin, a very traditional newspaper, came out with their own iPad App! A lot of people believe that the MB is one of the most backward dailies and I was under the impression that either Star or Inquirer would be first in expanding to the iOS platform but they were beaten to it by the Manila Bulletin. Yes, the reach of the iPad isn’t all that great here in the Philippines but the statement it makes for the Bulletin and the way it builds the Bulletin brand is definitely a good plus!

Just to balance this review though the Manila Bulletin iPad app still has a lot of bugs that they have to sort out.

Several local magazines have also already started to cross over to the digital world. Most of the titles that I’ve seen on the iPad are mostly from the ABS-CBN Publishing Group. Again you’d think that Summit would be the first to tap this new channel but apparently they don’t see the value in it yet.

In terms of local websites one of the most downloaded apps would probably be Click The City. It’s definitely one of the most useful and easy-to-use applications for anyone in the Metro who’s thinking of where to eat or what movie to watch. I frequently use this app on my iPhone because I love watching movies with my wife for our date nights.

Don’t just look at the iPhone
Apps are great and all but we should just limit ourselves to the iOS devices (iPhone, iPad). Android phones will definitely be a huge hit here in the Philippines since there are a lot of phone manufacturers that support that system (Sony Ericsson, Cherry Mobile, HTC, Samsung, etc). In fact Cherry Mobile came out with a relatively affordable Android phone just recently called the Cherry Mobile Magnum HD which will sell for less than P19,000. It will be interesting to see how developers and content publishers will be using Android to reach out in the next few months here in the Philippines.

  1. Man…futurewatch.

Technology moving at warpspeed faster than hungrier markets can play catch up.

Wondering with the way things are going ..when traditional advertising(ie tv, radio and print) will lose even more of the marketing mix pie for more of the digital kind.

I don’t know where advertising agencies(as we traditionally know them) are heading(whether they’re ultimately headed the way of dinosaurs)..but they have and are even now having to compete with legions upon legions of independent online marketers and entrepreneurs who are on the threshold of dominating tons of niche markets(subs & micros).
