Peter Juan shared this video on Facebook. Hilarious stuff. Watch the video first before reading my comments below.
I think the biggest problem the marketing industry faces right now when it comes to the world of social media and digital marketing is education. Managers and CEO’s just hire whoever presents to them first without really having a good idea of what social media marketing is all about. This leads to bad campaigns and wasted marketing budget. The person interviewing the “High Priest of Social Media” above is rare here in the Philippines and we need more marketers who have the same mindset.
I think this year we will see a lot of social media consultants and strategists offer their services to different companies and SME’s. My only advice to them is to make sure that they know what they’re talking about and be ready to be able to back-up the words “engagement” and “community” with numbers and data that traditional marketers will be able to understand and appreciate. Social media analytics is no longer a “want”, it’s a “need” for any good social media professional. For those who are hearing the pitches my advice for you is that you guys need to learn as well. You don’t need to be experts but you have to get the basics down.

That was quite hilarious wasn’t it? What isn’t funny though is that there are going to be people who will actually claim to be social media gurus with nothing more than a knowledge of buzzwords. What irks me even more is that some companies will fall prey to these guys because they just don’t know better. So thanks for this post Carlo. It’s a good eye-opener and hopefully, more companies, specially the SMEs, will be more cautious about self-proclaimed social media high priests or what not.
