Laptop bags on the floor = dangerous

CCTV footage of an unidentified man stealing a laptop at Oyster Boy restaurant in Metrowalk surfaced on Facebook this afternoon (thanks for the link Noemi). It basically shows how the thief scouting a victim, sitting down next to him, then uses his feet to slowly nudge the bag near to him. When the bag is within distance and out of sight from the owner and his companions he quickly opens it gets the laptop and puts it inside his own bag. He then stands up nonchalantly and walks out of the restaurant. It takes him around a minute to do everything. Here’s the video footage:

Never ever assume that your laptop or your valuables are safe just because they’re near you. Thieves have *perfected* the art of stealing stuff right under your nose so it pays to be doubly, if not triply, cautious. Imagine this guy was able to steal the laptop even if there were 2 other people sitted with the victim.

To those who are not patient enough to wait for the video download, here’s a screen grab of the exact moment the guy stole the laptop:

This already happened to me kuya carl :( my entire bag was taken from underneath my nose while I was dining with Marcelle and El 3 or so years ago. Metrowalk rin! I couldn’t believe it. I placed the bag in between me and Marcelle, sa ilalim ng table near our feet so I knew no one could reach it and then when we finished eating, my bag was nowhere to be found! Ang tapang at creative ng thief ha. Hanggang ngayon kamot ulo pa rin ako kung pano niya naabot yung bag.

  3. They’re getting daring than before considering that it’s such a crowded place. I guess having those small padlocks will help deter them.

If you take a look at the video closely, the thief/snatcher wasn’t alone. He had a watcher, (perhaps) the watcher has had his eye on the victim for quite awhile. The watcher pointed out who the victim will be and where exactly in his bag that the laptop was located (Come to think of it, how could have the snatcher know where the laptop was exactly located in the victim’s backpack, diba? The victim’s backpack was so bulky, how could knew which zipper to open?) Plus it was a good diversion, as it seems that there were 2 of them who entered the establishment. Look closely on the 45th second of the video, a guy enters in a 3/4 sleeved polo and jeans just right after the thief/snatcher and never really enters the restaurant (and he seemed like he made a signal to the thief/snatcher). Then in 1:17 seconds, the 3/4 sleeved polo guy was at the sidewalk of Oyster Boy, waiting for the snatcher to finish then they both exit on the same direction (to the left).

Grabe, they get so creative through the years! Be careful everyone. Same incident happened in a McDonald’s place in one of the malls in the metro, almost the same din yung style nila but whats devastating is that they stole the mom’s purse while she was fixing her daughter’s food. Grabe, ruthless people!

  5. It’s usually the case. A thief always has his watcher or else it would be dangerous for him. Maybe that’s another why it’s called “laptop” :) . But seriously, that looks sad. :(
