ABS-CBN veteran journalist and Twitterati Karen Davila said goodbye to the viewers of TV Patrol last friday. Karen, along with Julius Babao, will be replaced by former Vice President Noli De Castro and Korina Sanchez. Karen and Julius will anchor the late night news program Bandila together with Ces Drilon.
The buzz going around on Twitter is that ABS-CBN pulled Davila and Babao out to put in Sanchez and De Castro to fend off TV5′s Willing Willie hosted by Willie Revillame. I personally feel a bit sad for Karen because she was my favorite news anchor. She always came across as classy, intelligent, and compasionate. She was also very active on Twitter which made it easy for people to get in touch her.

Other television networks should jump on this opportunity and try to get both Davila and Babao. Both of them have built up powerful personal brands over the last decade and they can definitely bring a lot of credibility to any news organization.
I don’t think TV Patrol should worry about Willing Willie. A credible news program reporting the day’s most crucial events need not be scared of a variety show filled with dancing half-naked bodies, poor-me personal lamentations and headed by an egotistical maniac.
That’s for people who appreciate news (mostly A, B, C1?). For the masses they will still opt for entertainment. That’s how I see it at the moment.
Well, the reason why ABS-CBN is doing this desperate move is because they are the more affected station by Willie Revillame’s show. Willie’s loyal viewers are viewers of ABS-CBN, not of GMA-7′s, so if Willing Willie garners high ratings, it means he is successful in pulling his viewers out of ABS-CBN’s ratings share.
ABS-CBN has been airing plugs showing Sanchez and De Castro as veteran journalists. GMA-7, on the other hand, does its counter-attack by airing plugs not coming from voice overs but from viewers who “trust” 24 Oras. They even added the words “Walang Bahid Pulitika” on their punchlines to refer to their anchors not having any political history unlike Sanchez (married to a former senator) and De Castro (former vice president).
Of course, anchors who have political histories have tendencies of bias with their present and former colleagues in politics, which is why this is not a good move for ABS-CBN in terms of credibility. But of course, in terms of ratings, this might be a good publicity scheme.
Perhaps in the coming months, if Karen Davila and Julius Babao transfer to TV5, the country’s broadcasting industry might become similar to US’s tripoly (ABC vs NBC vs CBS), ABS-CBN vs GMA vs TV5. So, good luck to all networks.

you are absolutely right! people like willie revillame should not be given the support. he was nothing when abs-cbn employed him. now that they (abs) made him big, just look what he did to them. threatening the management? i just wonder why TV5 offered him that stint. just hope willie will not do the same thing to them.
Well that’s true Willie is nothing,he is not a good person to trust.He is a male chauvinist pig and should not be idolized.But I’m also sad for the changes happen on TV Patrol.I like Karen and Julius they are very credible reporters.Although I like Korina and Kabayan also but I hope they just give them a different show or if Karen and Julius will be move to Bandila they should be given the same credit and welcoming to that show.It feels very unfair on their side.
I hope both of them do not transfer. I read one of Karen’s tweets, saying thanks to Cristy’s “kind words”. Sana lang maintindihan ni Karen na hindi kind words yun if coming from Cristy Fermin. She just knows how to play with words. She doesn’t have credibility. I still can’t understand why TV5 is holding on her.
Makes you wonder if TV5 or GMA7 have made moves already to get Davila and Babao to their side. That would be a big loss to ABS-CBN.

Bukod sa nakakasawa ang mukha ni korina napakalabo pa ang reception ng abs cbn despite sa napakalapit lang namin sa abs cbn unlike gma na super linaw! Sinong magkakagustong panoorin ang isang palabas bukod sa pangit na malabo pa?
Not really a big deal. Kabayan and Korina (K&K) have been there during those times Karen and Julius were not even around in the show. They are already considered media institutions. Besides, nothing is permanent but change in this world – most especially when you are in ABS-CBN. The giant network’s former talents and employees who were shouting for justice for illegal dismissal know very best.

they were not loyal to him. people are just after the prizes that’s why there are so many people who like gameshows. it’s all about money. people are so desperate nowadays. give him a show that doesn’t give out prizes (e.g. teleserye, he is an actor anyway before abs-cbn developed him as game show host and closer to the masses) that should prove everything.

I really miss Karen…I hope she’ll come back soon then I am going to watch Headstart again with her wit, charm and class…it seems abs-cbn is losing its good judgment they are letting go a lot of talents both in the entertainment and news and current affairs departments. I don’t know why they are so scared…?!

tama nga naman. the two were given a break dahil nawala yung 2. They were both on the news dati pa. Ganun kasi sa network, if you are given the break, make the most out of it. Wala naman permanente eh.
Hi all, I also love to watch karen & julius.In fact I was so happy that they both have awards during the PMPC star awards for television, 2010. I am hoping that both ( Karen & Juluis) wil be given new (news program)to continue to inspire other people, of course within the ABS CBN pa din,ndi n kelangan lumipat p because with due respect to others..mas comfortably ako pag abs-cbn.
I am happy with Korina & Kabayan come back as well.ndi nmn cguro mgging bias both are professionals.
Need to accept changes and be thankful because no matter what GOd is in control.

ABS-CBN is always business,if you listen carefully on karen,julius n ted, they all report what they read from tabloid news,like saying sabi nila, which hearsay…and they alway keep their political agenda on what they put on the news.in states cridi
The reason why I don’t believe in ABS-CBN news and talkshows are:
1. Almost everything is just masked with the intention for profit.
2. Lesser info, more promotions.
3. Former VP was just a sidekick of Gloria. He knew all about the corruption but he did not do anything about it. He doesn’t have the reputation and credibility to claim himself “clean”.
4. Most of them see themselves as elites. I’m glad that Mr. Taberna is not one of them.
Nevertheless, I admire their field reporters.
