How News finds you these days

Before people would get their news by reading newspapers, magazines, or talking with friends. When the internet became popular, it became much easier since all we had to do was type the URL of the new site which offered free news. With the advent of social media, it’s now totally different. Before we looked for news – now it finds us. What’s even more amazing is that we get it from the most credible newscaster of all: our friends.

What’s interesting and relevant
The status streams in social media are turning out to be one of the most influential press wires. People tend to share stuff only that are interesting and relevant. Your network actually acts as some sort of filter for information that you’re probably not interested in. Current events though are now put in the spotlight more than ever. This was pretty much what happened with the Ondoy storm which ravaged the country. Facebook users had a glimpse of what was happening all over the metro. After that people saw that their friends were volunteering and they decided to do so as well.

Ask yourself this – when you asked a friend on where he heard about a particular issue, what was his answer? Most of the time it will be probably through their friends or if they read it on someone’s update on Facebook, Friendster, or Twitter.
