Groupon is in the Philippines [Updated]

After turning down Google’s $6 Billion offer, Groupon went on a buying spree in Asia. One of the countries they’re going to have presence is the Philippines. Yes, you read that right, Groupon Philippines. Yahoo reports that Groupon launched on Wednesday Groupon Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, and the Philippines.

What is Groupon?

Groupon is a free membership website that leverages their community to get deals with companies. Deals are “activated” once a certain number of people in Groupon agree to buy the product. For example, Groupon can have a deal with SMART for 100 new BlackBerry Torch phones at 30% discount. If 100 members of Groupon say they will buy then SMART will sell the units at that discount. SMART is happy, the customers are happy, and Groupon makes a cut.

So which company did Groupon buy that has presence here in the Philippines? The answer can be found in the header of this website:

Daily Deals, Coupons, Discounts and Tourist Attractions on the best in Philippines

Yugatech mentions in his blog article that there are several Groupon clones already in the local market like Buyanihan and CashCashPinoy. Anton from Our Awesome Planet wrote an entry compiling all of the Groupon-like companies present locally so you guys might want to check that out as well (thanks to @kzapkzap for tipping me on that). Groupon will definitely be a major threat to these start ups.

Digital Marketing Industry

With the entrance of Groupon to the Philippines this also opens doors for more digital marketers and social media managers. I’m sure that one of the main marketing channels of Groupon will be the Internet so there will be job positions open. Groupon adds to the number of pure digital companies in the country that hire Filipinos like Friendster and Yahoo. :)

Join the Groupon Team

I received several messages on Facebook asking me if I knew how to apply to to Groupon Philippines. I checked out the website of Beeconomic and found their jobs page. They have several openings but I’m sure this will expand in the coming days ahead. If you want to apply, send your resume to info.ph@beeconomic.com and include two letters of recommendation as well as a cover letter explaining how you can help grow their company.

Let the Discount Website Wars in the Philippines BEGIN! >:D

I recently tried out Beeconomic and it was a good experience for me because the deal I got allowed me to fulfill one of my long time wishes! Hehe. It’s really nice that a local company, a start up at that, got acquired by Groupon and I think this really opens up a lot of opportunities for merchants and shoppers locally :) congratulations to the Bee Team!!!!

  6. CashCashPinoy (CCP) is selling such good deals, I don’t know if it’s good or bad that my money mostly goes to them, haha.

Beeconomic on the other hand is just starting, so I hope it can give deals as good as CCP.

Accommodations and Gadgets should be part of these groupon and groupon-clone sites.
