Facebook to roll out new expandable ad unit!

Set to be announced this week at Advertising Week in New York, the new Facebook expandable ad unit will probably carve out a huge chunk of the online advertising budgets of companies all over the world. For the longest time companies could only get on board via the marketplace or several types of low visibility premium ads. This new ad unit should shake things up a bit.

The ad is basically at the home page side bar and it will have a bigger space dedicated for it if you have a a friend who “liked” the page being advertised already. Like this:

I’m interested to know though if this is something that’s self-served or you have to approach Facebook or their resellers to place ads like this one.
