Facebook EB Against Con Ass

Paranaque Congressman Roilo Golez showing ABS-CBN his Facebook, Blog, and Youtube accounts

Last Saturday, I helped the Blas F. Ople Policy Center organize the 1st Facebook Eyeball (EB) Meet versus Con Ass. This was brought about by the insanity which happened at the House of Representatives when they railroaded the Con Ass resolution. Despite the really bad weather, we had relatively okay attendance. I was also happy that the top 3 local television stations covered the event – ABS CBN, GMA 7, and TV 5. Our guest of honor was Paranaque Representative Roilo Golez. Pictures and details of what happened after the break.

How it all started
My aunt, Susan “Toots” Ople, President of the Blas F. Ople Policy Center and former Labor Undersecretary, is an avid fan of Facebook. When the Con Ass issue exploded, she called me up if I could help her set-up this event. That was around Thursday, which meant that we only had Friday to invite and organize the activity. Talk about really tight time lines! We created an event of Facebook and started sending out invitations. To my surprise, several politicians replied. Some declined, but Rep. Roilo Golez and former Rep. Willie VIllarama confirmed attendance.

With Filipino Voices writers: Ding, Pat, and DJB

The event was mostly conversational and informal in nature. We had Rep. Golez recall and explain to us what happened during that faithful night. It was followed by a free-flowing discussion on Con Ass and how we could utilize New Media such as use of broadband to access the internet to raise awareness and get people involved. By the way, can I just say that Rep. Golez is one of the best examples of how politicians should tap social media. He’s very much active on Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and blogging. If I’m not mistaken, he has hundreds of videos on his Youtube account!

I’ll make the labels and links later, just using free wi-fi in a car wash

After the lengthy discussion, we had the bloggers and the guests sign a freedom wall. It’s a big tarpaulin that has lots of free space for writing. Basically we asked everyone write their message for the Congressmen who voted for the Con Ass resolution. I decided to represent the gamers when I was writing here by saying the dreaded “AMPF”. Haha.

I’d like to thank everyone who dropped by. It was a really exciting and fun event and based on our discussions, it looks like we will be having more of these in the coming weeks. We’re currently looking at having a Facebook EB in Cebu. So to all the Cebu bloggers and “Facebookers”, please do stay tuned for more announcements.

I’ll write more later this afternoon. I’m currently in a car wash just taking advantage of Free Wi-Fi. I’ll be uploading and posting videos, pictures, and more stories of what happened by then. Cheers everyone, hope you’re all having a great weekend.

  1. too bad I was unable to attend but had to attend to a medical emergency that morning. we should continue this. In fact, a lot don’t really know what Conass is about. An information drive is really necessary so most of our citizens know what is happening. The issues can seem really confusing to most.

If the cbcp has denounced this regime at the height of step down call years ago, this is not the situation now. I partly blamed the cbcp stand and the fragmented oppositions why we are in the midst of turmoil, also FVR, JDV for standing side with the bogus malacanang dwarf and all evil occupants in the palace. Shame on you, sa mga TONGressman., ang kakapal ng mukha, mga bayaran.20 milyon lang pala ang katumbas ng kaluluwa n’yo. Maawa kayo sa mga magiging apo n’yo.

    To all my fellow Filipinos,

I am not such a fan of blogging, but my conscience is urging me to join NO-CON-ASS movement. Maybe in the near future, but definitely not now because the congress hurriedly approved because of their LEADER. It is self serving, and absurd.

I hope in my own little way, I could join the other Filipinos who are hungry for the change in our government, esp. the GMA Administration.

    NO-TO-CON-ASS!
    NO-TO-GLORIA ADMINISTRATION!

I am also strongly against CON ASS to be implemented at this time. Wait untill a united Congress & Senate would be able to integrate themselves to embody the real interest of the Filipino People, therefore would come out a more positive result. I also against for another People Power, since politicians are only using it for there own interest, that is why the 1st & 2nd People Power resulted into more unfavorable result to people, but only for those who took advantage of the people outrage that time. Let’s wait for the 2010 Election. And let’s vote for the right people who can lead our nation.

So far our people are now most vocal in expressing their dissents against Gloria’s administration. They have openly expressed their anger, disgust, dissappointment, & down right disapproval of what they see as plain mockery ot the Phil Constitution. Nobody can say that our poeple are sharly divided on this con-ass deal. They have triggered a wave of a loud protests (but not rioting). Millions of Filipinos; young & old are demanding their rights. The outrage & anger of our people will serve as catalyst for changes. This coming election must not be outright selection of the bad & the corrupt. Our govt must follow some rules & listen to the people. We have a criminal govt, simply corrupt. So, let’s stop this deception 7 mockery once & for all.

  28. Nograles’ proposed con-ass change is an emotional process, Filipinos are creatures of old habits & old ways cuz for Pinoys unchartered waters are very scary. However all the elements of pushing the con-ass are really in favor for Gloria. They planned this, commited to it, have the patience, courage, & tenacity to pursue them. Look & watch the SONA speech. Gloria blamed others, blamed the global economic crisis, blaming this & blaming that. so, as voters we must control our own destiny & be an active contributor rather than a passive observerr. If it is to be, then, it’s up to our voters to just do it.
