Facebook just announced on their blog that they’re going to revamp the News Feed section. Probably the biggest change is the announcement that they’re merging Top News and Most Recent into just one feed. The upcoming News Feed will adjust to how often you visit Facebook.
News Feed if you haven’t visited in a while
If you’ve been away for a while the feed will show just the top stories that you’ve missed. Facebook’s Mark Tonkelowitz says that it should act like your “own personal newspaper”. The top stories will have a blue marker on the upper left corner. Here’s a photo:
News Feed if you’re a frequent Facebook User
If you’re come back often you’ll automatically see the most recent stories first. They also made photos larger on the news feed. Here’s another picture:
Facebook Ticker
The last change is something that they probably took from Google+’s playbook. There’s now a ticker on the upper right hand corner which shows latest activities of friends.
How will this impact brands using Facebook
In all honesty we don’t know yet. Right now all I can say is that the bigger photo display should signal marketers to come up with more visuals and not just plain text because it has a stronger chance of attracting people when they scroll down their feeds. The key is to be able to be part of the “Top News”. We don’t know yet if that’s a different formula from the Facebook EdgeRank.
Anyway, interesting times for Digital Marketers, especially those who focus on social! Hehe.
