What 95% of Filipinos Don’t Get About Education

I gave a talk to the trainers of the Microsoft-TULAY program last weekend about the emerging internet trends in the Philippines. I discussed Micro-blogging a lot, by I also shared a few insights about how you can apply internet marketing for small-medium enterprises (SME). I won’t go into detail about the technical “bruhaha” of my talk, but I’d like to highlight the part where I talked about the right entrepreneurial mindset when it comes to maximizing the internet for your business. My personal opinon is that a lot of people fail in whatever they do because they’re not adequately prepared or equipped. It boils down to a need for more education – but not the scholastic kind. More after the break.

Don’t Stop Learning
My main message was all about education. And I’m not talking about the academic kind in High School or in College. I stressed the importance of learning after you graduate. Books and other forms of readings are treasure troves of experience and insights that you can readily apply to how you live your life – be it going on a diet, setting up a business, or excelling in your profession. This can be applied to how we use the internet. Embracing and learning the latest technologies available is a way of arming yourself for a better future.

There are so many things that you will not learn in school, and I found this out the hard way. No one really teaches you how to manage your finances, or what are the nitty gritty details of setting up a corporation. You’re not really instructed on how to lead a big team and how to mentor others. My advice is for you: DON’T JUST RELY ON YOUR GUT FEEL. Learn from the masters by picking up books or meeting with your peers and get their opinons.

Passion: Fuel to Education and Success
What separates greatness from mediocrity is really passion. It’s the greatest barrier for individuals to excel. They give in to their laziness and “pwede na” attitude. If 95% of the population is in that phase, do you really want to be part of the majority? Or do you want to be part of the elite 5%?

The Best Investment: YOU
What is your single best asset that will allow you a good life in this world? It’s not money… it’s YOU. It’s how much you learn and how much you apply those learnings that will make a difference if you will succeed or fail. Now here’s the tough question – when was the last time you invested in yourself? When was the last time you decided not to eat out or buy a phone because you bought a few books or went to a seminar? When you invest in your personal growth, you are moving closer to a better life.

To end, let me quote Captain Planet (LOL)… the power is yours! xD
