Do you check the Facebook accounts of your kids?

One of the websites that really got my attention is “Oh Crap. My Parents Joined Facebook.” It’s basically a site that shows contributions from readers with screen shots on how their parents ruined Facebook for them. If you go through the site, you’ll see hundreds, if not thousands, of examples. Personally, I don’t see anything wrong with parents checking out the Facebook accounts of their kids. Why? Because it’s inevitable, haha :P I mean I’d do it if I had a kid.

Responsible Social Networking
You can’t ignore friend requests from your family. It’s just plain rude. What you can do though is to be a bit more cautious with the content that you upload on Facebook. Just because it has your name on it doesn’t mean that it’s just yours and that it’s private. The moment you press that “publish” button, it’s public property and you’ll have to live with the consequences brought about by whatever you posted. I can’t count how many times I’ve seen people post rowdy pictures on Facebook, or maybe more incriminating ones like them kissing or smoking. I even have a friend who got scolded pretty bad because he posted a picture of him driving when he didn’t have a license.

However, this is also a two-way street moms and dads. Kids aren’t the only ones who should be doing responsible social networking. Remember that whatever you post, be it pictures or whatnot related to your kids will have an effect on them. I’m not saying that you don’t comment at their sites at all, but it’s better if you correct them privately so that you won’t have to publicly shame them.

REMEMBER: ALL OF THE FRIENDS OF YOUR KIDS CAN SEE WHAT YOU POST ON THEIR PROFILES.

Your online public scolding can ruin their social lives so make sure you think about whatever you’re going to post twice, thrice, and even 4 times. Social Networking with family doesn’t have to be awkward, you just have to do it properly. Always keep in mind that you can have a positive or negative effect on your kids/parents through social networking.

  1. I loved the “Oh Crap…” website. Funny but so true!

My kids and I are in Facebook. It was my daughter who invited me in way back in 2006. My son (he’s 11) would rather do PSP, Wii, PS2, GameCube, etc. than bum around in Facebook. My daughter (she’s 14), however, is a peer-magnet on and off school. But, knowing she has her own group, I don’t meddle by posting parent-like comments and wall posts. If it’s a funny post from her, I add a very short funny note, too – but that draws the line. It’s gotta be funny or nothing at all. I’d rather talk to her person-to-person than write a comment. Remember the old adage: “Praise publicly, reprimand privately.” So, don’t spill your parenting online — it will not work (and can even be worse!)

My 2-centavos to other parents out there who are always itching to comment — DON’T!!!
