First let me just congratulate the Department of Tourism, led by Secretary Mon Jimenez, for deciding to focus on social media for the tourism campaign. As a digital marketing professional I’m truly thrilled about this! The “It’s More Fun in the Philippines” campaign is groundbreaking, daring, innovative, and it will hopefully showcase what digital has to offer.

I fully support the campaign 100%. You can expect me to tweet, post photos, and share stuff on Facebook. I do have a few suggestions though that I wanted to share here on NMP.

1.) Sustainability: Hitting the top trending list on the first day is a good feat but what do we do from here? How do we continue to mobilize, inspire, and get Filipinos to keep tweeting and posting on Facebook? Maybe this is where the website will come in. It has to be interactive, inclusive, and will get Pinoys to participate.

2.) Focus on the Believers: I have a strong feeling that there are ridiculously more people who support the campaign that those who don’t and just want to whine. Focus on inspiring and galvanizing the believers. Ignore the naysayers for now. There is nothing that can be done to make them switch sides. If ever there is I think it will just take too much effort, lol.

3.) Get that website up and running ASAP: We need a solid Google footprint to take advantage of search. Hire the best SEO consultant you can find in the Philippines and make him work with you on this one. BBDO might be one of the best creative agencies around but I’m sure they’re not the best SEO experts. SEO is crucial especially if you’re targeting a global market.

4.) Partner with the private sector: There are a lot of companies and individuals out there who would love to help out. Tap them.

That’s it for now. Will add to this if anything comes to mind!

After 3 years and 7 months, Jonas De Los Reyes, one of the paragons of community management in the Philippines is leaving Yahoo to head a start-up social media monitoring and intelligence company called ThoughtBuzz. The company is currently present in Singapore, Malaysia, and India with plans to expand to the Philippines and Indonesia in 2012. Jonas will be Country Manager for the Philippines.

Thoughts on Social Media Monitoring & Intelligence

Analytics plays a crucial role in any field of work and that includes social media. I’ve used Radian6 before and it churned out fantastic reports that helped us decide on a lot of important issues in 2011. However the biggest problem with this service is that it’s brutally expensive especially if your search results are in the tens of thousands. It’s hard to justify the monthly fees for services like this.

That’s my hope with ThoughtBuzz. I hope that they will adjust the price to the Philippine market so that more companies can get their feet wet in social media monitoring and intelligence.

On a more personal note…

Jonas De Los Reyes

I’ve known Jonas for more than 3 years now. I first bumped into him when I was still in Level Up and we were talking about potential partnerships for gaming with Yahoo. What struck me the most about this guy is that he’s deeply passionate about digital (especially community management). That’s why I’m personally very happy for him! I wish you all the best bro in this new endeavor! Let’s have coffee soon!

Fundamentals of Social Media Talk at KBP

I was invited by the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas (KBP) to give a quick talk and a forum about the basics of social media marketing. Since I’m currently with TV5 (a KBP member), I immediately said yes! It was also a first for me to talk to this group so I was pretty psyched! The only problem though was that the event was all the way in Clark but the organizers were kind enough to have a van pick me up and bring me back to Manila after.

The talk was pretty straightforward and simple. I shared the latest statistics that I have from various public study highlights for the Philippines. Here are some of the studies that I quoted from:

Yahoo Nielsen Net Index 2011
Nielsen Incite 2011
Social PR on Filipino Foursquare Users
Universal McCann Social Media Wave 5
Gartner Study on Social Media Adoption

After the statistics I gave an overview about basic social media strategy using Facebook and Twitter and the closed it by sharing some examples and recommendations. As soon as I finished the forum I immediately went on board the van and zipped back to Manila for the IMMAP Open Mic Night (Pecha Kucha). More on that in a separate post!

Thank you to everyone at KBP! You guys were a great audience!

I log-on to Facebook daily and one of the things that keep popping up on my News Feed is the update that shows what my friends have read on Facebook. Apparently Yahoo is the only site taking advantage of this feature for now since they’re the only ones I see on my stream via this feature. Filipino web publishers (us included) will have to do this soon because this has the potential to drive significant traffic! Not only is it regular links but there’s some form of social endorsement because the name of your friend is attached to the link.

Here’s the screenshot of the update that I took earlier this morning:

A potential game changer for web publishing?

Now to get this up and running on our blogs and sites! >.>

One of the things I love about my job is the innovation and creativity with the medium. There’s so much you can do to push the limits and that’s something that we tried to do with our new campaign “Nasaan Si Aga“. Mechanics are simple: guess where Aga Mulach is going to for the first episode of his new show Pinoy Explorer via mobile for a chance to win an Asian Trip for 2 or register in the site and then tweet using the hash tag #nasaansiaga for a chance to win an iPad 2. Sounds simple right? What makes it cool? Everybody who tweets with the hash tag #nasaansiaga has their profile picture included in the mosaic in the site which eventually shows a picture of the flag where Aga is actually going to!

The mosaic at 14%! Check out www.nasaansiaga.com!

As more tweets come in the picture zooms out and eventually reveals the entire flag. Here’s the lower portion of the site where you’ll see the progress bar, the latest tweets, and more clues:

Here’s the promotional video which we showed during the press/blogger launch:

Thanks to everyone in TV5 and Sparrow who worked on this project! Really excited to see the full launch next week! Check out the site at www.nasaansiaga.com!
