According to a white paper report by Akamai, the Philippines is ranked 103 globally in average internet speed. Based on the Q2 2011 data the average internet speed of Filipinos is 1.2 Mbps. 10% have more average speeds of more than 2 Mbps. This is actually and improvement versus last year and the previous quarter. This is probably due to the aggressive rollout of both Smart and Globe with their 3G and HSPA+ networks. We’re still behind the global average though of 2.6 Mbps.

ASIA PACIFIC AVERAGE INTERNET SPEED DATA

The fastest internet in the world can be found in South Korea. The average internet speed there is at a whopping 13.8 Mbps, or around 6-7 times more than what we have here in the Philippines. South Korea is followed by Hong Kong and then Japan. The United States is ranked at 12th place registering an average of 5.8 Mbps.

There’s so much data and analysis that can be extracted from the white paper. I’ll probably write about this again when I have more time to go over the entire document.

One award I was looking forward to be handed out was the Digital Excellence Award. This was the first time it would be given out during the AOY. AdoboMagazine tweeted that the winner was Ogilvy and Mather! Congratulations! I’m trying to look for a list of winners published on a website but I can’t seem to find one. So for now if you want the full list just go over to AdoboMagazine’s Twitter Page and check out their stream. Congratulations again to all the winners!

Last year I gave a talk during the e-Commerce 2009 Summit which was organized by one of my mentors, Janette Toral. I was still working for Friendster then as their Digital Marketing Manager. In my session, I shared my thoughts on how to make self-advertising platforms work. Janette recently uploaded the video of the talk and I’m embedding it here as well. If you have time, please do watch the video below. The actual presentation is around 15-20 minutes long. The extra coverage after is actually the Q&A segment.

Going Beyond Clicks by Carlo Ople from Janette Toral on Vimeo.

Some major points in the talk just in case you’re too lazy to watch the whole thing:

Creatives make up for 50%-75% of the effectivity of an online ad

Highlight the brand prominently in your images. If it’s a flash ad, your brand logo or image should be in every frame.

Keep it simple. Deliver the message quickly and efficiently.

Studies show that ads featuring real people get attention better compared to graphic image ads.

Go local to make a bigger impact. Make your ad relevant.

Follow through. Get a contact point (e-mail, Facebook like, SMS)

Please note that the talk was given in 2009. There definitely have been changes since then but the core message of that session is definitely still applicable today.

Post Script: Hmm… the good thing with watching videos of your work is that you see major points of improvement. Hahaha!

Everyone who watches television has seen them, or read a newspaper had read them or listened to the radio has heard them. Now, ads are proliferating left and right you can virtually see them everywhere you go. When you head to the bus station or ride the train to work or even go online, people are bombarded by advertisements every 5 seconds.

The old style of advertising is known to interrupt you, to give you pause so that you look at the product being advertised and can get connected with a brand. But with 27 minutes of ad time per prime time hour (GMA 7), average of 3 ads per page on newspapers and all these billboard cluttering the road, people tend to just zap them all out (from their minds) completely…unless you compel them enough to interrupt their zapping abilities and create a connection.

A couple of days ago NMP launched an article about the difference between Flashy versus Brilliant concepts and ideas, this time around NMP will showcase some ads that we feel breaks out of the ad clutter. Sit back, enjoy and be entertained.

CHEERS AD

The brief of this ad is fairly simple: how do we creatively introduce this product in a country where there are so many restrictions in promoting alcoholic beverages. One such restriction is the beer cannot be seen being held, poured or drank in a public setting—not even in celebratory occasions. So the ad agency handling Cheers thought of taking the product out of the equation to get past the restrictions. What happened is just phenomenal! Cheers to that!

TMOBILE

Nothing is more powerful than the truth. And when your motherhood statement is directly shown and experienced by genuine people (not paid actors), then you have a very powerful campaign. “Life’s for sharing” is Tmobile’s tagline for this campaign. See how an innovative spectacle created such a big buzz online and offline.

GNC BURN BAG

Very simple promotional effort done creatively goes a long looong way and the guys at DM9 Jaime-Syfu (a local company) showed us how with these nifty bags. The insight and the message is clear and the play of the material is just so fun that merely having the bag incentivizes customers by a long shot.

MCDONALD’S FREE COFFEE

This one is just pure genius in my opinion. The agency responsible for this campaign elevated “sampling” to a new experience. I’m guessing the brief was pretty simple: we want to promote our new coffee and have people try it for free. A normal promotional agency would probably set up sampling stations and promo girls/guys handling out flyers. Check out what these guys did. Now, isn’t that just a wakeup call for the industry?

WHY SO SERIOUS? ALTERNATE REALITY MARKETING FOR THE DARK KNIGHT

Probably the most innovative marketing strategy to promote an already famous franchise name: Batman. What 42 Entertainment did was phenomenal and transformative. In an almost full 360 effort, 42 entertainment piqued curiosity of would-be-viewers and at the same time involved them in spreading the news of The Dark Knight to America (and because of the wonders of the internet, to the World). From innovative and transforming websites, to real-life role-playing games, to getting a free phone so Joker himself (or Harvey Dent) can contact you and rally you up and your friends to go out on the streets and wreck havoc (or stand for truth) until the final battle emerges in The Dark Knight movie itself. The planning and creation and step-by-step involvement of fans to rally a cause (even if fictitious) is just mind boggling. Truly immersive marketing!

www.waynefoundation.net/

In a similar effort the game Batman: Arkham Asylum employed an almost similar tactic of creating fictional real-websites that enhances your gaming, in this case, Batman experience: www.arkhamcare.com.
