iPad Amazon Kindle App versus iBooks: What should Filipinos get?

A lot of people were surprised when Apple approved the Amazon Kindle App to be available on the iPad. This was literally direct competition to their iBooks product which they launched together with the iPad. After using both apps I think Apple was thinking that their user interface, marketing, and over-all brand would be enough to compete head on with Kindle on the iPad. They’ve probably grabbed a portion of the market from Kindle but it Amazon’s baby still has significant advantages over iBooks. For Filipinos who have iPads that want to read eBooks, I recommend the Kindle App over iBooks. Details after the break.

iPAD AMAZON KINDLE APP
- Kindle has an amazing collection of books. Much bigger than the iBooks selection. What shocked me the most though was that iBooks doesn’t carry one of my all-time favorite authors: Patrick Lencioni. This is actually the main reason why I totally shifted from iBooks to Kindle.
- For some strange reason several books on the Kindle are cheaper versus the same titles in iBooks.

iPAD iBOOKS
- Better user experience. Beautiful UI and page flipping feature! Definitely more intuitive than the Kindle.
- Love the book shelf concept for holding all of your eBooks.

Both apps have amazing note taking and bookmarking capabilities. It’s so much fun just touching the screen and highlighting certain parts of the book that you want to go back to later on.

Kindle leaves iBooks behind on two big points: price and content. Kindle is the clear winner here for me unless Apple comes up with a way to drastically improve their selection and compete with the Kindle in terms of affordability.

By the way, I think the biggest factor why Filipinos should go for Amazon Kindle App is that you need a US Credit Card or iTunes Gift Cards to buy titles from iBooks. For the Amazon Kindle App any local credit card will do. :D

I was reading a book on kindle for iPad just a second ago. The fact that you can do either on iPad was a big selling point.
