Ako Mismo Campaign

A new TVC was recently launched which had a bunch of Filipino superstar celebrities which include (not limited to): Charice Pempengco, Arnel Pineda, Angel Locsin, Lucky Manzano, Edu Manzano and Chris Tiu. The campaign was called “AKO MISMO” and it basically talks about encouraging the viewers to play a more active role in nation building and that change starts from the individual. I personally love the campaign idea and the execution. From the TVC, it leads users to visit a website – AKOMISMO dot Com. In the site you register, give a bunch of personal information, and then you can post on a wall with your pledge on what you’re going to do to help the country.

As of this writing, there are more than 17,000 registrations.

A lot of speculation has been going on about this campaign. Until recently, no one owned up to it. Apparently, this is spearheaded by Edu Manzano which he revealed in an interview with the Philippine Entertainment Portal. Here’s a quote taken from the article:

“This is an advocacy naman na ilu-launch end of the month,” sabi niya. “Ang pangalan, ‘Ako Mismo.’ Lahat tayo, we take responsibility na, you know, marami tayong personality na involved. It’s non-political. Bawal ang politician.

“Pero, kumbaga nga, like may magsasabi na taxi driver, kinunan namin siya. Sabi niya, ‘Hindi na ako mangongontrata.. Ako mismo, ako mismo nagbabayad ng tamang buwis. Hindi ko na aasahan ang gobyerno na pagandahin ang kuwalidad ng buhay ng pamilya ko. Ako mismo ang gagawa ng paraan.’ So, we should launch it by the end of the month.”

May mga taga-showbiz bang kasali sa kanyang advocacy movement?

“Magugulat kayo. Kasi nakakakuha ako ng [permit]…last year pa. Kaya lang, medyo may kamahalan kahit sabihin na advocacy lang. We were able to put sponsors sa tulong ng isang advertising agency. Nakunan na kahapon yung iba. Today, meron din and the whole week, kinukunan namin.

“Walang fundraising ito. No money involved,” paglilinaw ni Edu. “It’s a call-to-arms na huwag na nating laging iasa ang buhay natin sa iba. Kaya ‘Ako Mismo. Ako mismo ang ang gagawa ng paraan.’”

My only concern here is what the site administrators are going to do with the information that you give. Manolo Quezon has speculated that this might be the program that will launch the candidacy of Manny Pangilinan. Personally I doubt if that were really the case but I can’t think of any other person who can afford this except MVP, haha. The administrators should explain in detail what they intend on doing with the database. The saddest thing that could happen is for this database to be sold to politicians who plan on running for the 2010 elections. Hopefully that’s not what’s going to happen here.

Anyway, here’s the TVC which is embedded on their website:

Just like any other website, please scrutinize the site first if it deserves your personal information. Honestly though, I fully support this movement – because I am one with the people in the TVC that believes that this country will only change if people start taking responsibility for it and quit on just pointing accusing fingers at the government. Hopefully there is no hidden agenda, and this doesn’t have any political flavor or else this campaign will backfire and literally bite the ass of whoever conceptualized it.
