7 New Media Predictions for 2010

2009 was a huge year for new media. There were so many breakthroughs and controversies that involved the use of the internet which made waves in traditional media channels. I won’t bother going through all of them. This sets us up for an even bigger 2010 for the industry. More and more people will be investing time, effort, and resources in new media and it has no where to go but up. Based on the Cartoon Network New Generations study, 6 out of 10 Filipino kids are already using the internet. This will grow even higher in the next couple of years! Imagine the impact this has on marketing. Anyway, let me share with you guys 7 bold predictions for new media for 2010.

1. A lot of influential celebrities (show business to media) will start blogging. This was earlier predicted by Jayvee Fernandez and I agree with him 100%. Note that popular and controversial 89.9 DJ Mo Twister has his own blog already.

2. Group blogs or blog networks will proliferate. This offers varied regular content as opposed to just one viewpoint from a single blogger. A perfect example is Blog Watch.

3. E-commerce will make big strides, especially in the second and third quarter. More companies will come up with solutions which will make payment easier. I’m not just talking about credit cards.

4. More opportunities for marketers who specialize in internet marketing. Local agencies and companies are putting up new media divisions so it’s definitely a good time to be in internet marketing, career-wise.

5. 2010 is the year of the “Social Media Gurus”. A lot of people will step up and claim that they are experts in digital marketing and social media. Please be careful in hiring consultants. Check their professional background and experience before getting them to work for you.

6. Web shows will start to gain momentum. With higher internet penetration and faster broadband, doing online shows will become more viable not just for independent producers, but for major companies as well.

7. 2010 will be the year where personal branding starts to get more attention from mainstream media. Last year was a good year for Alodia and now we even have the fast rising star – Carmina Topacio. Who’s next?

How about you? Any predictions that you care to share?
